Make a record you can check
Start a page for the exact appliance model you are considering. Our suggested kit is a tape measure, a rough sketch and a few photographs. Record every dimension with its unit. Write down where you measured it rather than keeping an unexplained list of numbers. Leave an empty space for anything you still need the installer or delivery provider to confirm.
For a refrigerator, Whirlpool’s measurement guide covers the opening’s width, height and depth. It also distinguishes depths with handles, without handles, and with doors or drawers open. These are different measurements: a cabinet that fits the opening does not establish that the appliance can open comfortably. Source: Whirlpool’s refrigerator measurement guide ↗
Check the exact installation instructions
Download the installation document for your model before ordering. Compare its dimensions and required clearances with your sketch. Do not carry a clearance number from another model into this decision. The FTC advises allowing room for full door or lid opening and safe ventilation when shopping for an appliance. Keep two lists: the space you have, and the space the model requires. A blank on either list is a detail to resolve before checkout.
On your sketch, mark anything that may matter to everyday use: a neighboring wall, an island, a door handle or a cabinet pull. Ask yourself whether the door and drawers can open as intended. The goal is a usable appliance, not just a box that occupies the available space.
Walk the route with the delivery provider in mind
Whirlpool’s delivery guidance says to measure door openings, hallways, stairwells and tight turns. It calls for checking width, height and depth along the route and allowing maneuvering room. It also directs buyers to the model manual and delivery service for specific requirements. Source: Whirlpool’s delivery and installation guide ↗
Give the delivery provider your measurements and photos of tight points. Ask them to confirm the route, any planned door removal, and what their service includes. Do not assume delivery includes installation or removal of the old appliance. Have the installer confirm the required electrical, water, gas or ventilation connections for the model; this checklist is for purchase preparation, not installation instructions.
Save those answers beside your measurements. When comparing costs, record delivery and installation charges separately: our calculator does not include them.
